“My philosophy is to keep things as simple as possible. Over the years I’ve done a lot of travel photography and one thing I’ve learned is that you should rely on your skill to get the shot and only take the equipment you really need.”

Ian Aitken is a successful commercial photographer based in Norfolk, UK. Raised in Sudan, Tanzania, Egypt and Cyprus, he was employed as a windsurf instructor in Menorca and as a deckhand in Monaco before turning to photography.

He has worked as a photographic assistant on advertising campaigns for instantly recognisable brands such as Emirates Airways, British Airways, Landrover, Kodak and the Samaritans. As a freelance photographer, his portraits, studio and location work have featured in campaigns as varied as Kronenbourg, and the Sunday Times.

Ian’s travel photography assignments include commissions for the Magic of Italy, Magic of Spain, Magic of Portugal, Crystal Active, Crystal Ski, Simply Ski, Sunsail, Hidden Croatia, Rough Guides (Madrid, Barcelona, Costa Brava, Lisbon, Mallorca).

At the same time, Ian has worked on a number of personal projects, including work featuring the Gauchos in Argentina and Portugal’s cork forests, and a documentary, Life and Death in Soweto, which involved living and working in the township for two months.
